How to Survive Without Sex for 50 Million Years? Dry Up

Scientists have finally solved the mystery of how one tiny creature has flourished for up to 50 million years without sex: it dries up.

Bdelloid rotifers, microscopic asexual freshwater invertebrates (animals without spines) are the ultimate escape artists, able to outpace their enemies by drying up and blowing away.

For most animals, sex is not only a way of producing the next generation, but a means of keeping enemies at bay.

"If an organism stops having sex and crystallizes its genome, all of [its enemies] catch up with it evolutionarily and can quickly overwhelm it," explained Paul Sherman, a neurobiologist at Cornell University in New York.

This idea, known as the Red Queen Hypothesis, helps explain why most animals go to great lengths to find mates and have sex. No Shit Sherlock! More...GO

Kelly Slater Pushes the Boat Out

Kelly Slater’s new board: whaddaya reckon?

It’s is called the Chunnel and it’s a whole new order of weird, even for the currently experimentalist best-surfer-ever Kelly Slater.

At this stage no one really knows what he’s thinking, other than that its outside the box by a long way. Channel Islands recently slipped this little nugget into the hype machine and speculation is already rife on whether KS will be riding this when the tour restarts at Snapper Rocks at the end of Feb., whether he’ll blow everyone away or make a fool of himself (not easy if you’re KS on the GC at aQuik ASP event, but not impossible) Whatever happens in the public eye, any surfers with an interest in board design should keep an eye on the Chunnel.

Here’s what CI Surfboards put out there:

“Water is compressed over the hole. As it passes over, it draws air into the Chunnel (channel/tunnel). It is the principal of the U class racing boats on pontoons. Each side panel is veed out with hard concaves toward the rails.”

Dolphins Really Are The Most Intelligent Creatures

About 25 years ago, while I was a Psychology graduate student at the University of Hawaii, I made several visits to the Kewalo Basin Marine Mammal Laboratory (KBMML) in Honolulu.  Those visits were field trips, made in conjunction with an intensive seminar on cognition that I was enrolled in that semester. The main focus of that seminar was human cognition, but along the way we studied comparative animal cognition as well, and my classmates and I visited the KBMML to learn something about dolphin cognition.

What we saw was impressive. At that time, researchers at the lab were just beginning to elucidate the extent of dolphins' ability to comprehend and interpret "an artificial sign language, in which gestures are like words and sequences of gestures are like sentences."  Through a series of carefully constructed experiments, the researchers were able to show that dolphins' comprehension of this language went far beyond mere response to commands (such as you would give to a dog to sit, or roll over).

The dolphins were taught to associate hand signs with a corresponding noun object -- e.g., a beach ball, a hula hoop, a surfboard -- and they learned signed verbs, such as fetch, take, and jump. Using these vocabulary items in combination, the dolphins could be instructed to "fetch ball' or "fetch hula hoop" -- and they would select the correct item from among several floating in their pool, and bring it to the trainer.

But it gets better! More...Go

Surfers Riding Waves Inches from the Jaws of Death

Fergal_Smith_catching_tube_few_feet_from_Great_White_Shark

When Fergal Smith dropped in on a monster barrel two miles off the coast of Perth in Western Australia, he little realised he was also dropping in on a monster of another kind. For as he powered down the face of the 20-plus-foot wave, lurking there just a few feet from him was a 500-pound Great White Shark. Smith didn’t even realise how close he had come to an encounter with one of the ocean’s deadliest predators. Other surfers’ shaves with man-eating sharks are closer still.

Great White Sharks - What Do We Really Know?

What do we really know about them?

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 16 January, 2010 : - - The Great White shark (Carcharodon carcharias), also known as white pointer, or white death, is a large shark found in coastal surface waters in all major oceans. However, their greatest concentrations can be found off the southern coasts of Australia, South Africa and California. It’s called a Great White because its underbelly is white. Its top is more of a greyish blue.

The Great White reaches lengths of more than 5m and may weigh up to 2,000kg. It becomes sexually mature at around 15 years of age and has a lifespan of 30 to over 100 years. The Great White shark is arguably the world’s largest known predatory fish, eating dolphins, porpoises, whale carcasses, seals and sea lions.

It is an open-ocean dweller and lives between the surface and 1,280m. It is most often found close to the surface.

Jaws, the movie and book franchise, provided the Great White shark with the image of a “man eater” in the public mind. In reality, humans are not appropriate prey for white sharks. While Great White sharks have killed a few humans, they typically do not target them: for example, in the Mediterranean Sea there have been 31 confirmed attacks against humans in the last 200 years, most non-fatal. In fact, you are more likely to be struck by lightning.

Great Whiye and Kayak : Thomaspeschak.com

Many incidents seem to be “test-bites”. Great White sharks also test-bite buoys, flotsam and other unfamiliar often inanimate objects, and might grab a human or a surfboard to identify it.

Other incidents seem to be cases of mistaken identity, in which a shark ambushes a bather or surfer from below, believing the silhouette is from a seal. Many attacks occur in waters with low visibility.

The species appears to not like the taste of humans, or at least finds the taste unfamiliar. Further research shows that they can tell in one bite whether or not the object is worth attacking. Humans, for the most part, are too bony for their liking. They much prefer a fat, protein-rich seal.

Accordingly, in most recorded attacks, great whites broke off contact after the first bite. Fatalities are usually caused by blood loss from the initial limb injury rather than from critical organ loss or from whole consumption.

Great White sharks, like many other sharks, have rows of serrated teeth behind the main ones, ready to replace any that break off. When the shark bites, it shakes its head from side to side, helping the teeth saw off large chunks of flesh.
