This is Active's recomended accommodation for those who are serious about their surfing and want to spend more time exploring the coastline than bars and restaurants. Entertainment is initiated by you and others on the trip; camp fires, bbqs and moonlit evenings is what you're in for. The accommodation is varied from the surf hotel to simply camping. There is a surf lodge that is based in the wild and offers basic facilities. It's extremely scenic and perfect for those wanting an intimate experience with fellow surfers and the wilderness. |

Surf Camps
The Atlantic Riders surf camp is operated close to Bordeira, in the middle of the National Park of the South-West Algarve. From our surf camp we have quick access to the many beaches in the Algarve and the Southern part of the Alentejo. Our staff bring you to the surrounding beaches daily, different spots can be visited on a day, dawn patrolling, sunset surfing, you name it. The surf camp works the same as the surfing safari. Every morning starts with a great breakfast with fresh coffee (no instant!), fresh rolls, fruit, cereal, etc. Then we're off to the beach. Surf classes will be given to those who need surf lessons. The surf breaks we visit are again suitable for all levels. Surf classes are always kept close to the beach in maximum waist-deep water, just to make sure that you are safe and that you feel safe. Experienced surfers paddle out to the line up and surf reefs, point breaks or the many beach breaks.
The camp is run on sustainable energy of solar panels. We have our own water supply system and waste treatment system. We also try to make a conscious effort in purchasing products with minimum packaging materials and recycle our waste. We have converted 20 foot ocean freight containers into properly insulated and wood finished cosy cabins. Atlantic Riders also donates to the Surf Rider Foundation. Our surf camp is located in a pristine valley where you find an oasis of beautiful plants, birds, boar, owls and other wild life. This means that we are away from bars, clubs and shops. The surf camp has a special vibe, a place where you can relax, feel good, mesmerizing in a hammock thinking back about the waves you have surfed during the day. Evenings are spent chilling under the moon and thousands of stars, sitting around the bbq enjoying good food, good company and good music.
Surf Safaris
Booking a surf safari is a great way to combine surfing and exploring many different beaches, towns, villages and the ever changing landscape of Portugal, with a new beach and a new place to sleep almost every day. With the surf safari Atlantic Riders combines surfing, camping and traveling into a action packed adventure. We are well prepared and organized and all the hard work is done by our experienced surf guides who take care of pretty much everything. The surf safari is ideal for those who travel alone or in small groups. Your fellow travellers are with you for six days, 24/7 so you get a good chance to make some friends and learn from each other in the water and on the land. Our groups in general age from twenty to forty years of age with a fifty/fifty mix of sexes, from all various walks of life and countries. Group sizes of maximum sixteen people plus two surf guides.
Atlantic Riders stands for a high level of water safety. People with zero or little surf experience will follow some classes before we will let you go free surfing. It does not matter if the waves are big, because we keep all beginners very close to the beach where the waves have less power.
Experienced Surfers paddle straight past the beginners into the line up. Local knowledge and the use of surf forecasts ensure that we bring you to the best waves of the day.
Every surf safari starts Monday morning at eight o'clock in Porto,
from there we drive Southbound. Later that morning you will have your first taste of Portuguese surf and great Atlantic Riders food. The weather report and surf forecasts will determine at which places we surf during the surf trip. Usually we will camp at three or four different places along the coastline.
Every surf safari ends Saturday morning after breakfast in our surf camp near Aljezur.
From there on accommodation, meals, etc, etc, will be at your own expense. Those who have to go back to work can be dropped of for free in Lagos (arrival twelve noon) or for a small fee you can be dropped at Lisbon Airport (arrival 4pm) or the city center of Porto (arrival 8pm). If you have some days vacation left and need more surf and chill time, you can stay at our comfortable surf camp in Aljezur. Our surf camp crew brings you to the beach daily so you can further develop your surfing skills.
