If you have ever been to famara, you will know what we are talking about. Sun, sand, brown bottoms, empowering cliffs, awesome surf, even better kitesurfing, no hotels, distant islands in the distance, and a slight breeze that urges you to jump in the water.....sorry..gotta go..my board is staring and talking to me!!!

Lanzarote is famous for its year-round surf. In October San Juan hosts the series 4 World Surfing Championships, in the summer we have year-round 4ft waves, in the winter we get bigger swells, and alot of big surf.

Whatever level of surfing you are currently at there is something to offer you a good time at Lanzarote. Experienced surfers can test their mettle on waves such as La Santa Left (The Slab) and El Quemao - the Pipeline of the Canary Islands. For those with less experienced or beginner surfers there are plenty of beach breaks. Famara is a good place to head for, a huge arc of sand catching the swells for you to surf.

Surfing Lanzarote

Lanzarote is found to the north of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands - the Hawaii of Europe! The surf, swell, weather and location are almost identical to that of Fuerteventura and even the waves are similar. It can get big, powerful waves firing off its reefs throughout October to March, but is consistent enough throughout the rest of the year to score good waves whenever you visit. The Island picks up swells on its North, East and West coasts.

That beautiful golden sand that stretches and curves into the distance - further than you can see and about as far as you'd want to jog. Those absolutely incredible cliffs that come into view as your drive down the windy road and get bigger, and bigger and oh my goodness they are unreal!

You walk down through the dunes with those awesome trade winds that have come all the way from north africa blowing at your face and make you forget its actually 27 degrees. You look down and your wet suit and think sod it, on goes the board shorts and rashy you stole from your room mate, grab the surfboard and in you run. Of course you're expecting to feel the icy english-coast-like waters but instead its around 23 degrees of perfection. You sit on your baord out the back waiting for another set of waves that look like they were hand carved by Poseidon himself for wannabees like me to be able to pop up on and ride all the way to the beach. Of course I fall in more times than I make it to the beach but I don't care. I always land up with a huge grin on my face. I just keep paddling back out and trying to get on the next one. Sometimes stopping to look at the kite surfers at the far end of the beach or imagine base jumping off those magical cliffs before grabbing the next set. I do that until there's nothing left in the arms, lungs and legs, collapse on my towel and go to my happy place.

There is just simply nothing like it - anywhere. My limbs are drained but pumped. The sun beating down on my face and the cooling winds helping me fall asleep to the sounds of the waves crashing away. I wake up feeling so chilled out, so happy and calm, like some kind of zen buddhist. I ask a local the time, our lift is arriving in 45 minutes to take us back to the hotel for an all you can eat buffet supper...just time for one last paddle!

Like I said - heaven on earth.
