Lanzarote's stunning landscape is formed from over 300 volcanoes. In recognition of their importance Lanzarote was designated a World Biosphere Reserve by Unesco and draws thousands of trekkers, hikers and eco-tourists every year.

Lanzarote is found to the north of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands - the Hawaii of Europe! Visitors on Lanzarote will be able to explore a variety of landscapes: lava seas and volcanic cones from the different eruption phases, cultivation on the basaltic ash material which takes place all around the island but mainly in the 'Geria' area where hard physical work and aesthetics have combined to create a very special landscape; quiet sandy beaches, overwhelming steep cliffs and valleys resulting from millennia of erosion.

Lanzarote people have traditionally struggled to survive by defeating nature. There is no water below the surface and there is little rainfall; nonetheless the inhabitants have developed special methods of cultivation to profit from the dew brought by the prevailing winds. This dew is retained and provides water for the plants in cultivated areas that are carefully pre-prepared with a layer of black volcanic material.

Those who come to Lanzarote must not miss the works and masterpieces of a genius named César Manrique, he transmitted to people a love and respect for nature and tradition. His influence has turned the island into an example to the rest of the world.

Lanzarote has achieved so much in retaining cultural influences and maintaining natural landscapes that it was declared a ‘Biosphere Preserve’ by UNESCO in 1993.

A description of Famara Beach by Cameron Clark who has been walking in Lanzarote with Active Adventures:

That beautiful golden sand that stretches and curves into the distance - further than you can see and about as far as you'd want to jog. Those absolutely incredible cliffs that come into view as your drive down the windy road and get bigger, and bigger and oh my goodness they are unreal!

You walk down through the dunes with those awesome trade winds that have come all the way from north africa blowing at your face and make you forget its actually 27 degrees. You look down and your wet suit and think sod it, on goes the board shorts and rashy you stole from your room mate, grab the surfboard and in you run. Of course you're expecting to feel the icy english-coast-like waters but instead its around 23 degrees of perfection. You sit on your board out the back waiting for another set of waves that look like they were hand carved by Poseidon himself for wannabees like me to be able to pop up on and ride all the way to the beach. Of course I fall in more times than I make it to the beach but I don't care. I always land up with a huge grin on my face. I just keep paddling back out and trying to get on the next one. Sometimes stopping to look at the kite surfers at the far end of the beach or imagine base jumping off those magical cliffs before grabbing the next set. I do that until there's nothing left in the arms, lungs and legs, collapse on my towel and go to my happy place.

There is just simply nothing like it - anywhere. My limbs are drained but pumped. The sun beating down on my face and the cooling winds helping me fall asleep to the sounds of the waves crashing away. I wake up feeling so chilled out, so happy and calm, like some kind of zen buddhist. I ask a local the time, our lift is arriving in 45 minutes to take us back to the hotel for an all you can eat buffet supper...just time for one last paddle! Trekking in Europe has never been better!

Like I said - heaven on earth.
